Time to go to the Fair!

May 2023

I realized a few months ago that I have lived in Los Angeles my entire 61 years and never made it to the L.A. County Fair.  Granted, I grew up and still live in the beach cities, and the Fair was oh so far away in Pomona, but you’d think I would have gone there at some point, whether on a field trip or family outing.   Instead, I recall a field trip to Olvera Street in downtown L.A. when I was nine, and perhaps a journey to the Natural History Museum, but I missed seeing the fair.

I did get to the State Fair in Sacramento in the early 80s while at college at UC Davis, but I was assured that the L.A. County Fair was much bigger and better.

So…I was recently trying to come up with a meet up place to get together with a dear friend – she’s been my accountability buddy for more than 25 years – get this – we talk every week and review our lists – how did we do?  What worked?  What didn’t?  Are we okay with that?  What do we want to accomplish next week?  Twenty-five years!  We went through a lot in that quarter-century and continue to cheer each other on.  She lives in Redlands so we don’t get together often.

AHA moment!  We could meet at the fair!  It was a 50-minute drive for each of us and a day off for me and who doesn’t enjoy fried food and girl time?

She was game.  It was a hoot!

First off – yes, every bit of food is fried until it’s screaming for mercy.  There are the funnel cakes, bacon everywhere and I was puzzled about “bacon wrapped fried pickles.”  I did break down and purchase an $18.00 order of fried zucchini.  Okay…they are a dozen foot-long zucchinis – delicious but seriously too much…I was starting to hawk them out to other hungry patrons…please take a zucchini…please!  They don’t store well and I finally tossed them.  And we wonder why we have an obesity problem in the USA.  I did step away from the funnel cakes, fried Oreos, fried everything else.

Pig races – fun!  Same with the goat races and duck races.   With a degree in animal science, I love being around animals, and it was fun to wander through the various barns and see the beautiful specimens of cattle, sheep, rabbits, chickens, and other sundry livestock.

We skipped quickly through the vendor exhibits – didn’t need the newest jewelry cleaner, mattress, hot tub, massage chair, or other expensive toys.

I will say that the Lego exhibit was very cool.  Some photos are posted – Amazing and very creative.  Although it looks like a baby mountain goat is caught in my hair.

And now I’m hooked…and I am going to the OC Fair later this summer.
